Start of school in Benin

The new school year starts today, October 1, 2009, in Benin.

The date was officially announced a coupl of weeks ago, and ever since, all stationery and book shops are teeming with people. School supplies are not only sold in shops, but also on stands along the roads. Everthing is found here: School bags, stationery, books, etc.

Primary school from 1st to 6th grade is free, but the parents still need to buy those supplies and the school uniforms. Many cannot afford it and either send their children to an apprenticeship or just to work.

We are thankful that the children in our support programme all continue school, even if some are staying down and have to repeat their grade. All Yedidja kids have received extra tuition by students who are also in our support programme. Therefore, they are well prepared for the new school year 2009-2010!
